Dynamics on the Edge: Star-Disk Interaction
نویسنده
چکیده
Our understanding of the dynamical processes which control the structure and evolution of the interaction region between an accretion disk and the central star is reviewed. If the central star is unmagnetized, this interaction is in the form of a classical boundary layer. However, if the central star is strongly magnetized, it is expected that the inner disk is truncated by the stellar field, and the accretion flow follows the stellar field lines to the magnetic poles. Several outstanding questions remain regarding this picture. It is likely that numerical MHD simulations will prove essential to answering these questions. However, in order to model the MHD turbulence, angular momentum transport, and possible dynamo action associated with the dynamics of star-disk interaction, fully threedimensional simulations spanning long dynamical times are required.

On the Rotational Dynamics of Magnetically Threaded Disks around Neutron Stars
We investigate the rotational dynamics of disk accretion around a strongly magnetized neutron star with an aligned dipole field. The magnetospheric field is assumed to thread the disk plasma both inside and outside the corotation radius. As a result of disk-star interaction, the magnetic torque on the disk affects the structure of accretion flow to yield the observed spin-up or spin-down rates ...
متن کاملOn Edge-Decomposition of Cubic Graphs into Copies of the Double-Star with Four Edges
A tree containing exactly two non-pendant vertices is called a double-star. Let $k_1$ and $k_2$ be two positive integers. The double-star with degree sequence $(k_1+1, k_2+1, 1, ldots, 1)$ is denoted by $S_{k_1, k_2}$. It is known that a cubic graph has an $S_{1,1}$-decomposition if and only if it contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we study the $S_{1,2}$-decomposit...
متن کاملA Model for Twin Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries
We suggest a plausible interpretation for the twin kiloHertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. We identify the upper kHz QPO frequencies to be the rotational frequency and the lower kHz QPOs the standing kink modes of loop oscillations at the inner edge of the accretion disk, respectively. Taking into account the interaction between the neutron star...
متن کاملTidal thickening of galaxy disks
We have studied a sample of 24 edge-on interacting galaxies and compared them to edge-on isolated galaxies, to investigate the effects of tidal interaction on disk thickening. We found that the ratio h/z0 of the radial exponential scalelength h to the scale height z0 is about twice smaller for interacting galaxies. This is found to be due both to a thickening of the plane, and to a radial strip...
متن کاملMolecules in the Circumstellar Disk Orbiting BP Piscium Research Note
Context. BP Psc is a puzzling late-type, emission-line field star with large infrared excess. The star is encircled and enshrouded by a nearly edge-on, dusty circumstellar disk, and displays an extensive jet system similar to those associated with pre-main sequence (pre-MS) stars. However, the photospheric absorption features of the star itself appear more consistent with post-main sequence sta...
